Independent and embedded LED micro-investment demand will grow exponentially next year

Stand-alone pico projectors focus on commercial and home use, while embedded portable devices focus on personal consumption, and the demand for both has been growing steadily. Conservatively, the global demand for micro-injection products using Himax LCOS (silicon-based liquid crystal) micro-injection chip technology should be one million units this year, three-quarters of which are embedded portable devices, and another One quarter is the application of a stand-alone pico projector, and I believe that both will grow exponentially next year.

At present, there are three major trends in pico projectors, namely, the improvement of luminance, the improvement of resolution, and the enhancement of color expression. Its light source mainly uses white LED, RGB led and laser.

In order to improve the brightness, LED suppliers need to improve the luminous efficiency of LEDs. Although white LEDs and color filters have the advantage of realizing color images at low cost, they inevitably affect color performance. Therefore, LCOS micro projector terminal manufacturers have adopted RGB LED light sources. Although the resolution is theoretically determined by the panel end, if the luminance does not reach a certain standard and the panel resolution is high, it is difficult to have a corresponding display effect.

At present, although some emerging micro projectors use laser light sources, only the 2D scanning MEMS micro projectors developed by Microvision alone have entered mass production in early 2010.

Although the laser light source has the advantages of good collimation and no need for manual focusing, it will cause laser spot phenomenon and affect the image quality. Although it cannot be solved, it still takes a lot of trouble. In addition, at present, since the green laser source is introduced into mass production for a short time, and only Corning can be mass-produced and expensive, it is necessary to use a laser as a light source to achieve popularity. It may take at least two years. time.

At present, most LCOS and DLP (digital light source processing) micro-projection technologies use LEDs as light sources. Due to the high mass production of LEDs, more and more manufacturers have the ability to mass production, and the cost continues to decline. Among them, LCOS micro-projection technology can also use white LED with color filter, which can effectively reduce the cost of micro projector and increase the penetration rate.

Huang Herun, China Director of Himax Display, said: "In the nearly 50 micro-optical engine module factories or solutions companies that cooperate with Himax, most of them use white LEDs or RGB LEDs as light sources. Only two or three are trying to design laser sources. Himax focuses on the development and design of LCOS chips, and will not interfere with customers' choice of light sources."

At present, among Himax's customers, there are nearly 30 micro-optical engine module factories or solution companies that use Himax LCOS chips and RGB LED light sources. Among them, 3M, Guangjing, Hongdie, Jinghua and Jing are famous in mainland China. Jing, Caiyi and Ray.

Huang Herun pointed out: "The laser scanning micro-injection technology provided by Microvision is also one of the many micro-investment solutions. There is no competition or threat to Himax. Everyone is doing their best in the field of micro-injection technology to jointly promote micro-investment. The product market is booming."

The popularity, low cost, stability, long life and acceptable efficiency of LED light sources are the main considerations for most merchants. Most customers still have some concerns about the safety and high price of the laser source, although the laser source can produce more vivid colors.

Himax has been the development, design, manufacture and supplier of LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) chips. Himax LCOS is also the most widely used micro-projection chip in the field of micro-projection. Nearly 50 micro-optical engine module manufacturers or solutions companies in the world are using Himax LCOS chips to develop their micro-optical engines, including more than 20 in mainland China. These micro-optical engine module plants and solution companies have different optical path designs for different product applications, and Himax LCOS is embedded in their micro-optical engine modules.

The Himax LCOS micro-projection chip portfolio covers a wide range of sizes and resolutions, allowing customers to pair their white LEDs or RGB LED sources to develop micro-optical engines for different applications.

Huang Herun pointed out: "The application of micro-injection products has been pursuing a small optical engine with small, bright, cheap, lower power consumption and higher resolution. More powerful or more efficient RGB LEDs have always been used. In the optical design of Himax customers, there are no RGB LEDs with appropriate specifications and low price, which is a big problem in itself."

At present, the production capacity of Himax LCOS micro-projection chip can reach 400,000 pieces per month. The production capacity of the micro-optical engine module factory using the Himax LCOS chip, on average, each has a capacity of 20,000 to 30,000 per month.

The Himax LCOS chip used in the white LED micro-optical engine is currently shipping nearly 80,000 pieces per month. Himax LCOS, which is used in the RGB LED micro-optical engine, will be shipped in the third quarter of this year. It is estimated that it will reach 20,000 shipments per month starting in the fourth quarter.

“Modular or factory companies that use Himax LCOS chips to design and manufacture micro-optical engines are currently concentrated in Northeast Asia, Taiwan and China, and a few are in Israel and Australia.” Huang Herun said, “Since 2008, Major customers in the market with large-volume shipments include Nikon, 3M, Guangjing, Hongdie, Jinghua, Jingjing, Caiyi, Ray, etc. There are also some internationally renowned manufacturers of digital cameras and mobile phones in the design and development stage. in."

In late May of this year, Microvision demonstrated a 720p HD laser micro-projector at the SID annual meeting in Seattle, USA. It produces 15 lumens of brightness, an impressive 5000:1 contrast ratio, and standard color broadcast TV. 2 times. The company plans to launch the world's first commercial 720p HD PicoP laser micro-investment engine in the second half of next year.

The new ultra-small PicoP micro-investment engine was just completed at the end of March this year. It offers color WVGA (848 x 480) image output with less than one-third the power consumption of its predecessor. The product was sensational in the industry as soon as it was released. In less than ten days, a consumer electronics manufacturer placed 8.5 million orders and planned to embed the PicoP micro-investment engine into a high-end mobile multimedia player.
