VHDX partition expansion? Win10 disk management on the line

The initial space planning of the VHDX virtual system is insufficient, and the system disk is likely to be filled and crashed during the operation. If you only use the expansion tool to expand the VHDX file capacity by modifying the parameters, after the virtual system is loaded, the problem of insufficient partition space still occurs. Then, how can VHDX partition expansion be completely solved? There is no other way to achieve VHDX partition expansion?

1. Solve VHDX with Windows 10 Disk Management

Click the "VHD File Info" button under the "Disk Mirroring" tab and then click the "Reset Capacity" button to reset (Figure 1). After entering the Windows 10 disk management, select the "Operations → Additional VHD" command to load the VHDX file. It can be seen that there is an unallocated area on the VHDX disk. This is the file capacity increased by the expansion tool BOOTICE. Right-click on the VHDX disk and select the "Extended Volume" command (Figure 2). Follow the prompts to use the maximum free space as an extension (Figure 3). After the expansion is complete, the space for the VHDX partition really becomes larger (Figure 4).

2. VHDX virtual disk expansion at the command prompt

Press Win+R to run the DISKPART command, enter “SEL VDISK FILE=X:\pathname\VHDX filename” (note the extension VHDX), and press Enter to display that DiskPart has successfully selected the virtual disk file. Then enter “EXPAND VDISK MAXIMUM=Capacity after Capacity Expansion” (in MB). After the carriage return is executed, the system displays that DISKPART has successfully expanded the virtual disk file. Finally, use the partitioning tool (such as Mayo partition assistant), right-click the expansion section on the virtual disk, and select the merged partition.

3. Ghost 32 realizes VHDX virtual disk expansion

Under a multi-system VHDX system, create a large-capacity VHDX (for example, 50GB) and mount the VHDX. Then use the Ghost32 tool to clone the small-capacity VHDX partition to the new VHDX partition. After cloning is complete, restart the computer to enter another non-VHDX Windows system and delete the small-capacity VHDX file (or, for security reasons, you may not delete the renamed backup). Then rename the big VHDX to the same name as the original small capacity VHDX.
