When you haven't figured out VR/AR/MR, Unity has already focused on XR

"Unite Europe 2017" was held in Amsterdam on June 27-29 local time. The conference is based on Unity's European Developers Conference. Unity is a development tool and a fully integrated professional game engine for creating video games, simulations, and other interactive 3D, 2D, and VR/AR content.

The conference brought together developers, filmmakers, artists, teachers, researchers, and others who use Unity to create content. The conference focused on the development of VR/AR/MR and future trends.

Earlier this year, Unity released the XR Foundation Toolkit (XRFT) at the 2017 Game Developers Conference (GDC), which is defined as a framework for XR developers, while allowing anyone to join XR development. In the opening keynote of the conference, Unity's XR researcher Sarah Stumbo revealed: "Unity's upcoming XRFT will be ready later this year."

XR (X Reality) refers to an experience that includes technical guidance that combines digital and biological reality. It includes a wide range of hardware and software, as well as sensory interfaces, applications, and infrastructure. You can create content such as VR/AR/MR and CR (movie reality). With XR, users can bring digital world objects into the physical world and physical world objects into the digital world, creating new realities.

"XR" is an inclusive and flexible terminology where "X" represents an unknown variable. XR technology can be applied in almost every area, such as: construction, automotive industry, sports training, real estate, mental health, medicine, health care, retail, design, education, news, music, and tourism.

Although the release date of the XRFT toolkit has not yet been confirmed, it is not far away from the developer's exposure to the XRFT. "The XRFT is a work that we are currently working on. The toolkit will greatly improve VR/AR/MR development experience and we are very excited about it," said Stumbo.

When talking about the hardware that the kit can interface with, Stumbo said: "There are many VR/AR devices on the market today, such as Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PSVR, and Microsoft's HoloLens, etc. Our goal is to connect all these XRFTs. Hardware so that developers can build a VR/AR/MR experience on any platform."

Unity has always been an important player in the VR content development field, and a large number of developers use their software to create the latest virtual content. After the launch of the XRFT, it will also bring a large number of developers into the creation of XR content, bringing us more new experiences.
