WatchThru is an AR concept smart watch created by a research team from the University of Bremen, Google, and Hasselt University in Belgium. It can extend some interesting AR elements into traditional smart watches, that is, based on smart watches. Add a transparent display for augmented reality interaction.
For a simple application example, during the navigation process, the main display shows general map information, while the secondary display shows the direction of the arrow, allowing the wearer to find the target location more intuitively.
WatchThru devices come in two different prototypes. The simple version is just Android Wear with an extra display. More complex versions require the use of an external tracking camera and sensor to track the position of the wearer's head in order to correctly display the environmental icons that cover the real world.
The research team hopes to develop a pop-up display (secondary screen) in the future that can be collapsed onto the main display when the AR function is not required.
At present, WatchThru is only in the prototype stage. It is believed that smart watches and AR will produce more and more interesting possibilities in the future.
