Virginia is included in the annals of robotics because it is the first state in the United States to approve robotic express delivery.
The new bill will take effect on July 1, and the governor has signed the bill on Friday.
The two lawmakers in Virginia who supported the bill, Ron Villanueva and Bill DeSteph, drafted the bill with Estonian land-based robotics company Starship Technologies.
According to the new law, the robot used by the courier can't walk more than 10 miles per hour and can't weigh more than 50 pounds, but allows the robot to automatically walk on the road.
The new law does not require the robot to be within the controller's field of vision, but requires the operator to equip the robot courier with at least one controller to remotely control the robot and to be responsible for recycling in the event of a robot failure. In addition, this express robot can only cross the road through a crosswalk.
The municipalities of the cities of Virginia have the right to decide how the courier robots operate locally. For example, a city or city government wants to impose stricter restrictions on the speed of the express robots or completely prohibit the operation of such robots in the city.
In an interview with Recode, Congressman Villanueva said: "Members have not opposed the bill. Instead, they are very curious about the technology and the finished robot. They want to know what benefits these express robots can bring to the citizens."
Congressman Villanueva said that many companies, such as Amazon and Grubhub, wrote a letter to Virginia lawmakers in support of lawmakers' approval of the new robotic express bill.
While Starship Technologies has helped the new bill get approved, Virginia also welcomes other robotics companies to do business. Many companies like Marble and Dispatch are working hard to develop robots that can deliver automatically in the city.
Starship is working with the post office in Washington, DC, and DoorDash in Redwood, Calif., to test its courier robots.
Similar bills have been submitted to the Idaho and Florida state councils, and the two states may also approve the new bill.
