OLED display sales increased 22% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2016. It will reach US$6.2 billion in 2016.

According to the latest report released by market research company DisplaySearch this week, OLED has benefited from widespread use in mobile phones, and its global sales in the second quarter of this year reached a record of $192 million.

According to foreign media reports, DisplaySearch released on Monday, "OLED quarterly delivery and forecast report" pointed out that in the second quarter, OLED display sales increased by 22% year-on-year, an increase of 32%.

The report pointed out that the strong shipment of AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) display is mainly due to its application in mobile phones. More than 15 different models of AMOLED phones were released this year. The AMOLED display has lower energy consumption than the PMOLED (Passive Organic Light Emitting Diode) display, and is more suitable for portable devices such as mobile phones and MP3s.

Jennifer Collegrov, director of display technology at DisplaySearch, said in a statement, "AMOLED displays have become an important differentiating feature of high-end electronics. This technology is not only used in mobile phone main displays, but also in applications. Portable media players, digital cameras and other home appliances."

The production of OLED TVs has become a costly and time consuming challenge for most manufacturers. Although several companies have demonstrated new OLED TV products, Sony is still the only manufacturer of OLED TVs.

The report said that LG Electronics plans to launch a 15-inch OLED TV, but Sony is still developing OLED TVs of more than 20 inches.

DisplaySearch believes that with the improvement of OLED technology, AMOLED display will enter the PC market and will be used in notebooks and netbooks in 2010. At the end of next year, 20-29-inch OLED TVs will meet with consumers, and OLED TVs over 30 inches are expected to wait until the second half of 2011.

DisplaySearch expects that the overall market size of OLED displays will increase from US$600 million in 2008 to US$6.2 billion in 2016. OLED displays for mobile phones will dominate, with sales reaching $3 billion in 2016 and sales of OLED displays for TVs of $2 billion.
