NXP Introduces New S32K Microcontroller Platform to Accelerate Automotive Software Design

Based on ARM® Cortex®-M and offering complete automotive-grade software, this product line offers an excellent combination of privacy, security and low power consumption.

Nuremberg, Germany, March 14, 2017 (Embedded Systems Show 2017) – NXP Semiconductors NV (NASDAQ: NXPI) today unveiled the S32K1 product line and the outstanding automotive-grade tools and software The kit, which has several features to meet future needs, supports the ARM Cortex-based expandable MCU family. In many automotive applications, this combination greatly simplifies development and reduces time to market. Ten of the world's top 15 automakers have adopted S32K in their next-generation vehicles, and the platform sets the future direction for automotive-grade ECU development.

Traditional software development methods have traditionally relied on AUTOSAR (Automotive Open System Architecture) for automotive-grade drivers, but not all applications. Another way is to develop independently. This method not only requires a lot of manpower, but also increases the qualification requirements and leads to the dispersion of important resources. As ECU complexity continues to increase, software quality and time-to-market requirements can only be met with proven, proven subsystem components.

Greatly reduce software complexity

For more than 15 years, NXP has been committed to delivering professionally maintained automotive-grade software. With this experience, NXP wants to minimize the development complexity for customers who use a variety of development methods.

For applications that do not mandate AUTOSAR, NXP offers an alternative, self-developed solution – a pre-qualified, free automotive-grade software development kit (SDK). With this kit, you can quickly complete prototyping with a simple drag and drop feature. These include:

· The underlying driver (LLD) for all peripherals that meet MISRA and SPICE Level 3 standards,

· Optional LIN, NFC and touch sensing application middleware

· FreeRTOS® operating system

· Drivers for NXP's affiliated ICs (such as System Basis Chip (SBC) drivers) for faster application startup and production readiness

· Documented source code and easy-to-use examples that eliminate the need for reference chip documentation during application development

NXP has pre-installed the SDK in the free S32 Design Studio (DS), an Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE) that supports multiple compiler and debugger options.

For AUTOSAR applications, NXP leverages the new Complex Device Driver (CDD) and S32K Starter Kits from ARCCORE® to extend support for standard MCAL and OS, significantly reducing the cost and complexity barriers of technology adoption. It is now available for free for evaluation.

Hardware to meet future needs

Unlike the existing solutions on the market that require multiple MCU platforms to cover a similar range, the first S32K1 series is based on the high-performance ARM Cortex-M core with a flash size of 128KB-2MB. All products in the series include ISO CAN FD, CSEc hardware security and ASIL-B support with ultra-low power consumption. Combined with common packaging strategies and production-grade software, this scalable approach maximizes reuse and enables customers to respond quickly to changing market demands.

comment

Manuel Alves, general manager of NPI's automotive microcontrollers and processor GPIS products business, said: "The S32K marks a turning point in NXP's automotive-grade MCU strategy. We are moving from a variety of proprietary architectures to a continuous portfolio of ARM Cortex MCUs. Combine hardware and software differentiation to meet future needs."

Paul Lee, Global Distribution Marketing Manager, NXP Automotive Microcontroller and Processor Business Unit, said: "The S32K has software and tool support from NXP and multiple ARM ecosystem partners to help developers at all levels of experience reduce time to market. In addition, significant investment in automotive-grade software sets a new standard for MCU suppliers.

Time to market

S32K144 samples and development boards for $49 are available now, with volume production scheduled for the second quarter of 2017. The S32K MCU is part of the NXP Product Sustainability Program and is guaranteed for at least 15 years of continuous supply. For more details, please visit S32K
