MAX3740A overview

The MAX3740A is a high-speed VCSEL driver for small form factor (SFF) and small form factor pluggable (SFP) fiber optic LAN transmitters. It contains bias generator, laser modulator and complete safety features. When temperature and laser characteristics change, automatic power control (APC) adjusts the laser bias current to maintain a constant average optical power. The driver supports common cathode and differential configuration structures.

The MAX3740A operates at up to 3.2Gbps and can output 15mA laser modulation current and 15mA bias current. Adjustable temperature compensation is also provided so that the extinction ratio meets the specifications in the entire operating temperature range. The MAX3740A and Dallas DS1858 interface can meet the timing and diagnostic needs of SFF-8472. The MAX3740A supports various VCSEL packages, including low-cost TO-46 connectors.

The MAX3740A safety circuit detects failures that may produce dangerous light intensity and disables VCSEL output. The safety circuit conforms to the SFF and SFP multi-source agreement (MSA).

The MAX3740A is available in a compact 4mm x 4mm, 24-pin thin QFN package, and operates over the -40 ° C to + 85 ° C temperature range.
