How far is the autopilot car from us? A number of unmanned auto maker giants disclose their own causes for the first time

How far is the self-driving car from us? A number of unmanned auto maker giants disclosed their own faults for the first time. How far is the autopilot car from us?

Or what is the extent of autopilot technology now?

It is difficult to have an objective and unified answer to this question. Before the California Motor Vehicle Authority (DMV) would ask the unmanned vehicle company in California to test the road,

Submit a "separate" report once a year.

However, before this report mainly disclosed the number of “disengagement”, there was no detailed description of the cause of the problem. Therefore, DMV requires several companies to disclose the details of the breakdown.

This latest supplement report is now released.

A total of eight companies were involved, including Baidu America, Delphi, Drive.ai, General Motors, Nissan, Telenav, Waymo, and Zoox.

The report shows that some problems are common to all autonomous driving companies. Some of these issues are related to the vehicle's perception of the environment, some of which are related to the way the road travels, and others are hardware and software failures.

There are also some problems that come from the outside, such as excessive pedestrians and unclear lines of traffic signs.

Let's take a look at the failure cases reported by Baidu. On one occasion, Baidu’s unmanned vehicle had turned to the wrong direction, the human driver had to take over the vehicle; there were several misclassifications of the traffic lights; there was a sudden brake when the vehicle was suddenly imported; the lane was deviated; Wait.

The problems reported by Delphi include the fact that the autopilot system cannot identify specific traffic lights, GPS positioning problems, and accidental (usually illegal) behavioral capacity to respond to other vehicles.

Drive.ai stated that their autopilot system had encountered problems in dealing with sharp turns and had also faced jerky or uncomfortable braking. Their system has also experienced positioning errors.

Common problems include that the sensor does not always capture all the data on the opposite lane, and that at the intersection, the autopilot system does not always analyze all other data to analyze another incoming vehicle. Other problems include inappropriate lane changing, too large right-turning, and difficulty handling cone buckets on the road.

Waymo is the best-performing autopilot company. One of the problems they reported was that autopilots couldn't turn right when they didn't find a red light at a road junction. In addition, the company listed some software and hardware issues.
