In recent years, the connection between automobiles and the Internet has become closer and closer, and the number of connected cars has also increased year by year. However, connected cars may experience cyber attacks being remotely controlled, with serious consequences.
Under normal circumstances, the information is transmitted through the in-vehicle network, also known as the Controller Area Network (CAN), and the in-vehicle system and its operational behavior can be controlled. However, the network attacker remotely attacks the control system, "hijacks" the communication devices and gateways connected to the external network, and sends malicious information, causing the car to operate in violation of the driver's intention, including sudden acceleration or braking, thereby causing a traffic accident.
A currently used method for detecting whether an in-vehicle network receives attack information: checking whether the interval between information periodically transmitted through the in-vehicle network is within an acceptable range. However, the time to receive real information may vary, so real information may be mistaken for cyberattack information, causing a smooth trip to be interrupted.
The new technology developed by Fujitsu allows the system to learn the period of receiving information under normal conditions, and then compares the actual amount of information received with the number of information that the system should receive based on learning experience, based on the difference between the two. Whether it has been attacked by a network.
Fujitsu plans to commercialize the technology in FY 2018. The technology will be an integral part of Fujitsu's mobile IoT platform.
