BMW shared car entered Chengdu and took the lead in investing in 100 i3 operations

According to reports, BMW will launch a shared car service in Chengdu next month. This will be BMW's first official operation in China. The baby will first launch in the US, and then Beijing will be used as a pilot. The model launched in Chengdu this time is I3 electric car.

According to foreign media reports, BMW recently said that it will launch its first official car sharing project in China starting next month, using the i3 electric car.

It is reported that the project will be carried out in Chengdu. The BMW ReachNow car sharing service was first launched in the United States in 2016, and previously used Beijing as a pilot city.

BMW said that another DriveNow car rental service currently has more than 1 million users in Europe, and in 2015 the number of users of the service was 500,000. At the same time, the service has achieved profitability.

With the continuous restrictions on private cars in China and the growing traffic congestion and environmental pollution problems, BMW hopes to continue its business in China and achieve rapid growth.

“The future growth is not from the production and sale of cars, but other services,” said BMW manager Thiemo Schalk. “We need to find new solutions, not just selling cars to consumers.”

This time BMW will take the lead in investing in 100 i3s in Chengdu. After arriving at the destination, users do not need to return the car to a fixed parking lot. This is completely different from the previous test project in Beijing, which requires the user to return the car to one of the three designated return locations after use.

Whether the location of the returning vehicle is restricted is a factor that restricts the development of the car sharing project. But Schalk said that he hopes to achieve a real mobile return in Chengdu. In November last year, BMW said in an event held in Shanghai that it hopes to achieve this goal.

At present, Chinese users have developed the habit of using shared bicycles, but the shared bicycle service is also facing the problem of insufficient number of returning cars, and most of them are distributed in big cities.

In recent years, shared electric vehicle services have flourished in the Chinese market, but mainly based on low-cost small electric vehicles produced by domestic automakers, including EVCard operated by SAIC and GoFun services of Shouqi Group. BMW said it will bring better quality models to the Chinese electric vehicle sharing market.

The BMW DriveNow project currently invests 6,000 vehicles in 13 European cities, 15% of which are i3 electric vehicles. In the United States, the ReachNow service offers 1,400 BMW and Mini-branded vehicles, which are already in operation in three cities.
