Australia officially auctions 5G spectrum, including 2GHz, 2.3GHz and 1800MHz spectrum

In recent months, the topic of 5G spectrum has continued. Four mobile operators in Australia previously purchased a large number of spectrum to promote their 5G plans.

According to foreign media reports, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) announced this week that it will start the latest round of spectrum auctions, which include bands that can be used for 5G mobile services. The spectrum of the auction includes the 2GHz, 2.3GHz, 3.4GHz and 1800MHz bands.

According to ACMA, resources in the 1800MHz and 2GHz bands may be used for LTE, and 2GHz may also be used for 5G services. 2.3GHz will be used for wireless broadband services, and the 3.4GHz band will be used for TDD mobile broadband services. 3.4GHz is also a 5G alternative frequency band for many countries around the world.

In addition, Australia plans to conduct an auction of the spectrum in the 3.6 GHz band, although the time has not yet been determined. ACMA emphasizes that the spectrum auction is expected to help improve coverage of network services in other parts of Australia's major cities.

"We expect these spectrums to be used for mobile or fixed wireless broadband services, most of which will be available in regional areas," ACMA President Nerida O'Loughlin said in a statement. “But we also provide the flexibility of the technical framework for each frequency band so that they can be used for other purposes.”
