AGC develops a "quartz lens" for deep UV LEDs

Asahi Glass (AGC) has developed a quartz lens suitable for use in UV LEDs. It is understood that the use of the improved quartz lens can simplify the process of UV LED and reduce the capital cost investment. The prototype of the quartz mirror will be produced in the third quarter of 2018 and is expected to begin mass production in 2019.

At present, mercury lamps are used to disinfect air and water. However, mercury is harmful to humans and the environment. After the Minamata Convention on Mercury came into effect in August 2017, the production of mercury lamps will also be affected. The deep ultraviolet LED with the same disinfection function has less impact on the environment and is expected to replace the mercury lamp and become the next generation disinfection light source.

However, there are still some problems with UV LEDs that still need to be solved. One of the problems is that transparent adhesives bonded to quartz lenses and window materials are quite expensive and easily degraded by ultraviolet light. The other is the solder (Solder) problem of the package and the window. The manufacturer must have a large oxygen-free device when sealing. The current solder is too hard, and the thermal expansion coefficients of the package and the window are different, causing thermal stress (Thermal Stress) destroys the interface between the package and the window, causing the UV LED product to have a risk of cracking and leaking.

The quartz lens developed by AGC for UV LED can solve two major problems. AGC integrates quartz lens and window material, so no expensive and easy-to-degrade adhesive is needed. The overlaid solder can be packaged directly in the general environment without the need for large oxygen-free equipment. In addition, the specially coated solder material is soft and can reduce the thermal stress, so the UV LED has no problem of cracking or air leakage.
