1. What is TM - Introduction
The English name of TM is called Termination Multiplexer, which means the terminal multiplexer. It is a device that multiplexes multiple low-speed signals into one high-speed signal, or vice versa, to split one high-speed signal into multiple low-speed signals. The terminal multiplexer TM, the digital cross-connect device DXC, and the add/drop multiplexer ADM are the main network elements of the SDH network.
2. What is TM - the role
SDH main equipment includes: terminal multiplexer (TM), add/drop multiplexer (ADM), synchronous cross-connect equipment SDXC and network management system NMS.
The terminal multiplexer is a device that multiplexes multiple low-speed signals into one high-speed signal, or reversely decomposes one high-speed signal into multiple low-speed signals.
The add/drop multiplexer--- is the most widely used and most feature-rich device in SDH . It has the flexibility to up/down multiplexing the low rate signals in the STM signal through the other end. The ADM also has a time slot switching function that allows interconnection of different VCs between two STM signals and facilitates bandwidth management.
Synchronous Digital Cross-Connect Device (SDXC)--- is a transmission device that combines multiplexing, wiring, protection, monitoring, and network management functions. It can replace the patch panel and cross-connect VC.

TM supports a full range of PDH tributary interfaces and STM-1 optical and electrical ports. Service delivery with synchronous and asynchronous functions, and an integrated ATM STM-1 user network interface with ATM layer cross-connect capability.
