Soon, TV manufacturers will introduce ultra-thin LCD TVs, which are only 5mm thick. Current "wallpaper TVs" use OLED screens, and LCD TVs will be as thin as before. According to estimates, from 2018 onwards, TV manufacturers will compete in the ultra-thin high-end TV market, more fierce than ever, because the market’s growing appetite for 70-inch and larger TVs, and manufacturers have already competed Now.
Industry sources revealed on the 6th of this month that LG Display has recently started mass production of new LCD TV panels. It uses glass light guides instead of plastic light guides. Samsung Display has also developed a new quantum dot panel. Samsung has coated QD material on the glass light guide plate. At present, Samsung is soliciting customers.
OLEDs do not require a separate light source, LCDs require light sources and other components, so LCD TVs are thicker than OLED TVs. LG Electronics has developed a wallpaper OLED TV, which is very thin, just like a wallpaper, and has a thickness of only 4mm. In general, ordinary LCD TVs are about 10-15 mm thick.
If the light guide plate is used on the LCD TV panel, the thickness can be greatly reduced. With this technology, LCDs can pursue OLEDs in the high-end market. In addition to valuing the thickness and weight, the high-end market is also pursuing ultra-high image quality and large size.
The light guide plate is the main part of the backlight assembly (BLU). In the LED LCD panel, the LED light is installed next to the light guide plate, and light is transmitted through the light guide plate and sprinkled on the surface of the large screen. The light guides distribute the light evenly and illuminate the surface.
In general, the light guide material used by the company is transparent polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Because PMMA is very strong and very light, it is not easy to break, and PMMA transparency is extremely outstanding, overflowing in glory, placed in visible light, the polymer's light absorption ability is also very weak. Unfortunately, PMMA is not heat-resistant or moisture-resistant. It will deform and stretch over time.
In order to solve these problems, manufacturers will install wider frames when designing TVs, leaving a wider air gap, but the thickness of BLU will increase accordingly.
Companies can use glass as a light guide material because they are heat and moisture resistant. Why did companies not choose glass? Because glass also has its drawbacks, it has a less glossy feel than other materials. Display manufacturers have changed the composition of glass to develop a special type of glass that is particularly suitable for use on light guides.
For example, Asahi Glass has developed a new type of glass light guide plate named XCV, which is 20 times more robust than existing light guide plates. Humidity affects the heat strain and expansion speed of the light guide plate. The results are 8x and 100x respectively. Since last year, Asahi Glass has provided XCV light guides to LG. The thickness of the light guide plate is only 1.8 mm, suitable for large-screen TVs.
LG Display plans to mass produce ultra-large and ultra-thin LCD panels with Asahi Glass SCV light guides. These LCD panels have almost no borders and can be used in ultra-thin products. High-end LCD TVs can also be used.
In 2015, Corning introduced the Iris glass light guide plate. It also cooperated with Japan SDP to launch a prototype 70-inch 4K LCD Module. Corning explained that if Iris manufactures LCD TVs, the thickness can be reduced to 5mm.
Samsung Electronics has introduced a 65-inch UHD ultra-thin curved LCD prototype panel product with a thickness of 4.9mm, using a Corning Iris light guide. Although Samsung has not yet confirmed to whom it will supply, from the middle of this year, Samsung has been marketing new products to Chinese companies.
In order to reduce the thickness, Samsung monitors are coated with QD materials on glass light guide plates, and QD films are not used. This method is also flawed. Samsung uses a barrier film to protect the QD material from heat and moisture. In order to overcome the shortcomings, Samsung Display is ready to launch a product with better color performance and higher brightness. Not only that, Samsung also integrates color light leakage films with QD to reduce thickness.
Once Korean companies begin to supply LCD panels with glass light guides, the competition in the global high-end TV market will become even more fierce. TV manufacturers will rush to introduce more unique designs.
