Maxim Integrated introduces the MAX30034, the latest defibrillation protection device, for use in medical devices such as defibrillators, ECG (electrocardiogram) diagnostics and monitoring, from defibrillation pulses and electrostatic discharge ( ESD ). Compared to existing processing methods and devices, the device simplifies design, saves more than 75% of space, reduces bill of materials, and dramatically improves performance.
One of the challenges in defibrillator and ECG monitor design is that the ECG input amplifier must withstand high voltage pulses during cardiac resuscitation. These pulses can easily damage high-sensitivity electronic circuits used to capture millivolt-level ECG signals. To prevent such damage from occurring, it is necessary to configure a gas discharge tube (GDT) and/or a transient voltage suppression (TVS) device in each channel, as well as a triple protection of a multi-component architecture such as an ESD protection diode. Moreover, the leakage current (key parameter) generated by this scheme is relatively high, about 1-2 nA.
Maxim 's four-channel defibrillation protection device, the MAX30034, uses an advanced semiconductor technology that uses an innovative topology to absorb high-energy pulses bypassing sensitive circuits without damage. This small, powerful product requires only a pair of external resistors per channel to easily achieve smaller size and lower leakage current. The MAX30034 can replace the primary GDT and/or TVS, as well as the secondary ESD protection diodes used in the conventional scheme for forced circuit protection. The device is capable of maintaining leakage currents below 10 pA (100 times lower than GDT/TVS) after more than 100,000 defibrillation pulses.
