Starting from the second half of this year, LG and Samsung have launched their first flexible display smartphones, and it seems that since the last two months, these two flexible display products have slowly entered. Our sight is slowly becoming familiar to consumers. Although the flexible display is very attractive to everyone, from the current point of view, the price seems to be the biggest obstacle hindering the entry of this new form of product into the mainstream market.
Take LGGFlex as an example, the market retail price of this model is 940 US dollars (about 5120 yuan), which is obviously not the best choice for users who are pursuing cost performance. For most potential buyers, although GFlex is also a top-level flagship product, is it worth the extra $ 200 to $ 300 for the special shape of the flexible display? I believe that different consumers have different answers in their hearts . As for whether this GFlex is really worth the money, we still need to find out in detail together.
Appearance Although LGGFlex and Samsung GalaxyRound are only two flexible screen smartphone products currently on the market, LG is very optimistic about the market prospects and predicts that the market size will reach 2.5 billion US dollars in 2018. Therefore, GFlex also carries many forward-looking concepts of LG. When we hold GFlex in our hands, the first impression is very large. The GFlex body with a 6-inch display reaches 160.5mm × 81.6mm × 8.7mm, which is not smaller than LGG2 and GalaxyNote3. However, if compared with other 6-inch screen products on the market, GFlex is still relatively compact. For example, the Nokia Lumia 1520 is close to the thickness of GFlex, but the frame and height are much more than GFlex. Even the HTCOneMax with a screen of 5.9 inches exceeds GFlex in thickness, height and width, and it weighs 28.3 grams heavier than GFlex, so the latter seems to be more comfortable in the hand.
The curvature of flexible screen products can bring ergonomic applications to a whole new level. For example, the Samsung GalaxyRound's horizontally concave design is more comfortable than the traditional GalaxyNote3. It can be seen that the curvature of the fuselage can make the fuselage fit the user's palm more naturally. However, because GFlex bends longitudinally, it's a little weird to hold in hand. Due to the radian, the index finger often slips off the edge of the fuselage during operation.
LG said that GFlex has an optimized curve of 700 mm, and this arc is the result of their 300 different arc tests. LG also believes that this is the most suitable arc for most consumers' face shapes. However, although GFlex is very comfortable when making a phone call, if you put it in your pocket, especially the pocket type of tight jeans, it is definitely not comfortable.
Although flexible display phones have many unique features, are there enough benefits for users? Actually it's quite delicious. For example, GFlex has good flexibility, to a certain extent, it can play a certain degree of protection when the mobile phone is subjected to external forces; its banana-shaped appearance means that the microphone is closer to your mouth than ordinary mobile phones; The radian can reflect more sound, which plays the role of increasing the speaker volume. LG also added a 3500 mAh flexible battery. If there is no curved battery, there is no GFlex. GFlex batteries use stacking and folding technology to provide higher stability and better performance.
The back cover of GFlex is made of plastic material, and is a smooth metal wire drawing process, a little slippery, and it is very easy to get fingerprints. It is basically impossible to wipe it thoroughly unless wearing gloves. Like the LGG2, the back cover of the GFlex has buttons on the back. The only difference is that the power button has an LED indicator function. The 13-megapixel camera, infrared emitter and flash are arranged above the buttons.
Since all the buttons are designed to the back of the fuselage, the side of GFlex looks very clean. At the same time at the bottom of the fuselage is a microUSB interface and 3.5mm headphone jack, on the left side of the fuselage is a micro-SIM card slot and microphone. There is a small indicator light on the front of the fuselage, which is next to the earpiece and distance sensor. Covering the flexible display is a flexible, thin gorilla glass panel.
As the name suggests, the flexible machine does have some flexibility, which we have never seen on other smartphones. Under certain pressure, the body of GFlex can be flattened, but of course it will immediately return to its original state. LG said they applied 40 kilograms of pressure to GFlex 100 times in the test, and still did not have a permanent effect on its physical shape. Although LG did not disclose the maximum pressure this phone can withstand, it certainly has exceeded the normal range.
In actual use, we agree with LG's statement. In order to test the physical limit of this phone, we conducted a lot of tests, but still did not cause any damage to the phone. LG explained that they did not add higher flexibility to GFlex because it requires a certain amount of toughness to maintain the feel of high-end devices. But at least we can say that this phone's ability to cope with external forces gives us confidence in its durability. More importantly, this is of great significance for future mobile phones. Flexibility is critical for future curved phones, especially as manufacturers continue to develop new form factors that use foldable / foldable displays.
Self-repairing ability In addition to the flexible screen, GFlex is also the first smartphone on the market with self-repairing ability. A layer of self-healing coating was applied to the back shell of GFlex, and this coating has been applied to the automotive field before, and now it seems to have gradually entered the field of consumer electronics. The purpose of the application on the mobile phone is to eliminate the scratches that are accidentally left in daily life. After all, as a flexible screen mobile phone, it is easier to produce scratches than ordinary mobile phones. It seems that LG has put a lot of effort into GFlex.
Of course, this self-repairing back cover is not a panacea. The coating is flexible enough to allow the surface to spring back to its original shape. But because it is very thin, it can only withstand forces up to 500g. This means that you should not use sharp objects to show off this feature to your friends. As mentioned above, it can only repair small scratches that stay on the surface, such as those caused by keys and coins, rather than deep inside. The repair process will also be affected by the ambient temperature, the higher the temperature, the faster the repair speed. So if the area you are in is very cold, then you have to find a way to warm it up, such as constantly rubbing it with your hands.
We are very excited to test this feature. During the test, we used keys and wire brushes to leave scratches on the back cover of the device, and the results were mixed. Within a few minutes, some scratches on the surface will disappear, some will be reduced, and some will not improve. We generally don't like a smooth back cover, but this time we are fortunate that the GFlex back cover is smooth, because it makes the scratches less obvious when viewed at the right angle.
Below the flexible display is the most fun part of this evaluation. Since GFlex is called a flexible display phone, does its screen really bend? Through actual testing, we can happily tell you that GFlex's display is not only flexible, but its bendable angle is far more than the machine itself. However, due to the limitation of the casing, ordinary users cannot see its bending ability.
Therefore, we disassembled the GFlex and removed the flexible display inside the fuselage for individual testing. This flexible screen feels like a plastic playing card. Both ends of the screen can be folded up, and even a closed cylinder in the siege is very easy. LG said that this flexible screen can reach a maximum bending angle of 400 mm radius. As for the battery of GFlex, it can also be bent, and we can see related content later.
Although the resolution does not represent all of a display, GFlex's flexible OLEDRGB panel has a resolution of only 720p. This should only appear on the mid-range phone, and it is not commensurate with GFlex's flagship configuration positioning, which is very disappointing. LG did not disclose too much the reason why it did not choose a 1080p resolution screen, but we speculate that this is because flexible screen technology cannot yet mass-produce panels with resolutions above 720p.
The low resolution is very obvious in GFlex. Whether it is text, images or video display effects, there is no 1080p effect that we are familiar with before. However, in addition to poor resolution, the GFlex screen also has many other advantages that can make up for the shortcomings of insufficient resolution. For example, the viewing angle of this flexible OLED screen is very large. The original flat OLED panel already has an excellent viewing range, and this parameter has been further strengthened after bending. More importantly, even in an outdoor environment with sufficient light, GFlex can also display very clearly.
Users of systems and software that are familiar with Android products know that LG has always responded slowly to the Android system version upgrade. And GFlex is also expected to use the Android4.2.2 jelly bean system, while LG has always refused to disclose the appropriate Android4.4KitKat system upgrade.
In addition to the Android system version, GFlex is basically the same as LGG2 in overall function, but there are more other functions that can use the flexible display. Among these functions, the dual-screen mode is most useful, which is similar to Samsung's multi-window function. Long pressing the back button will pop up a menu composed of local applications, and let the user select different applications to display in different screen windows. You can drag and drop files between two windows, or click a link to open in another window.
In addition to the dual-screen function, GFlex also adds the same gesture control and one-handed control functions as the G2. For example, one-handed keyboard and SlideAside can make full use of excess screen space. At the same time, we have also seen some new functions on GFlex. For example, a virtual navigation key will appear at the bottom of the screen. If the user moves the navigation bar left and right, these keys will also move, making it easier for users with one-handed operation. contact.
As for the functions that are used to display special effects and have no practical significance, for example, the scrolling effect of quickly displaying notification information on the Samsung GalaxyRound by tilting the body to the side is also reflected in GFlex. The actual function of the latter is that the lock screen interface will move simultaneously with the mobile phone in the specified direction.
It is also worth mentioning that the number of pre-installed GFlex applications is staggering. In addition to the functional applications native to the Android system, it also includes more than 50 operators and LGQ series service applications. Some of them can be uninstalled without root.
Compared with G2, the camera effect of GFlex has a backward trend. Although the two products have the same camera parameters, including a 13-megapixel camera, 3.97mm focal length, and f / 2.4 aperture size, even the camera interface is exactly the same. ISO, white balance, exposure and other parameters, including autofocus switching manual focus test depth of field, press and hold the shutter to lock the exposure and focus, and use the keys on the back of the phone to adjust the focus are exactly the same as the G2.
At the same time, the shooting mode is also very comprehensive, HDR, panoramic mode, dual lens, Shot & Clear, continuous shooting and so on. However, the most important optical image stabilization function was removed from GFlex. LG gave an official explanation on this, saying that it had originally planned to add this feature, but because the height could not be installed in the curved mobile phone after adding the optical image stabilization module, it had to give up.
But despite this, GFlex's daytime shooting performance is almost the same as LGG2, but it will affect the shooting in low light environments. It should be known that LG products are not as good as Lumia series or HTCOne in taking pictures, so the photos are more blurred and more noisy in low light conditions.
Configuration parameters and battery life The Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor has not been on the market for a long time, but it has become the standard configuration of the current flagship smartphones on the market, and GFlex is no exception. 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, Adreno300GPU, 2GB running memory and other parameters make GFlex not inferior in comparison with other mobile phones. However, from the perspective of price, the high configuration of GFlex is not surprising.
However, compared with the above score, the actual use experience is more important. Fortunately, GFlex performed very well in actual tests. When dealing with multi-tasking or dual-screen functions, GFlex did not appear to freeze at all, but occasionally skipped frames in 3D games. In general, however, GFlex's performance does not make people complain.
In addition, if a mobile phone has poor battery life, no matter how good the performance is, it loses its meaning. We are very pleased that LG has equipped this product with a 3600 mAh battery, and the actual performance has not lived up to our expectations. In the video test, GFlex persisted for 14 hours, and under higher-intensity daily use, it still had 40% of the remaining power after 18 hours of operation. From this point of view, users can use it according to the frequency of charging once every two days.
Competitors Strictly speaking, the only competitor of GFlex is the Samsung GalaxyRound, which costs $ 1,000 (about RMB 6080) and also uses a flexible display. Although the two products are completely different in bending form, they can be said to be separate All have unique charms. Combined with our previous evaluation of the GalaxyRound Jay, Samsung GalaxyRound is more comfortable to use and has a better display effect, while GFlex has better self-healing ability, flexibility and longer standby time.
LGGFlex is a very good mobile phone, but we do not recommend consumers to buy a mobile phone with more than $ 900 unless it has revolutionary or very clear special features or advancements, and it is really worth the money. At present, flexible screen products are still an emerging product type, so we do not expect GFlex to become a very popular model, and its existence is more symbolic and conceptual. Because the production and R & D expenses of flexible screens are very high at present, the price of more than 900 dollars is also a reasonable positioning for the product itself.
It can be said that at present GFlex is more responsible for collecting consumer feedback information, helping LG to make continuous improvements in the subsequent development of flexible display products. With the passage of time, product development costs and manufacturing costs will continue to decline, and these will eventually be reflected in the price reduction. When the price of flexible display screens falls to a reasonable range, and the technology continues to mature, they will become a new choice that consumers like. What we need to do now is to quietly wait for LG to continuously improve its flexible display products and the day when it finally matures.
